Shelter

Shelter was founded in England in 1966 by the Reverend Bruce Kenrick, who was horrified by the state of the tenements round his Notting Hill parish. The setting up of the organisation in Scotland followed in 1968.

The Big Issue

The Big Issue is one of the UK’s leading social businesses, which seventeen years since its inception continues to offer homeless and vulnerably housed people the opportunity to earn a legitimate income.

CATH CEO, Robert Bisset, has set himself the gruelling challenge of running two marathons in seven days.

Robert, 58, a keen runner, is taking part in the Chester Marathon on 7th October and the Liverpool Marathon on 14^th October.

Robert is hoping to raise at least £500, which will be split equally between CATH and the new Chester Food Bank. The initiative, led by churches, will be based at Wesley Methodist Church, St John’s Street, and is aimed at helping people struggling with their weekly food bills.

Petition

CATH would like to say a big thank you to everyone who supported the petition. More than 2,500 people signed the petition, which was launched by All Saints Church, Hoole, after Cheshire West and Chestercouncil (CWAC) did not shortlist CATH in the tendering process to deliver homeless services.

Sleep Out 2013

This year our annual sleep out will take place on Friday 6^th December from 10pm to 6pm at the Friary car park, Grosvenor Street, Chester, CH1  2DD.

This year CATH’s AGM will take place on Thursday 5^th September. Further details to follow.

Big Lottery

The Lottery project has come to the end of its first year and has been a success. The CATH client group has achieved more qualifications, participated in centre run courses and voluntary schemes and reached their personal goals.

The project is continuing to develop and innovate, meeting the needs of our client group. CATH has exceeded the targets set for the year, which include basic skills literacy assessments, job search training, cv writing, accredited learning and volunteering.

One of the popular skill building sessions CATH takes part in is bread making. Through the Lottery funding, we have implemented a training programme in partnership with the Wesley Methodist Centre in Chester that gives expert bread making training to homeless clients.

It has evolved into a social enterprise and clients also interact with the general public, helping them with the process, building confidence, developing new skills and, perhaps more significantly, being part of an innovative venture that aims to provide training for other homeless clients.
